Description of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary celebration: customs and traditions:
The Assumption of the Virgin Mary is a Catholic holiday, which is a public holiday in several regions of Germany and is associated with the legend of taking Mary to Heaven in body and soul.
On this day, bunches of herbs and bouquets of herbs and flowers are brought to the church, for them to be blessed by the priest, upon which they are hung in the attic and are believed to protect against diseases, trouble and lightning strikes. Artemisia, lovage, marjoram, thyme, caraway seeds, St. John's wort, valerian, basil, etc. are usually collected in bouquets. This is not the only superstition associated with this holiday. Believers make pilgrimages (in German Marienwallfahrten) 30 days (in German: Frauendreißiger) after the celebration of Mary's Assumption, especially in Bavaria; for Mary is believed to be blessing the earth at this time.
On this day, services and church processions are held.
The origin of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary holiday
This Catholic Church feast originated in the 5th century AD and is associated with a legend or tradition, according to which Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, was taken to Heaven. As legend has it, upon opening the coffin of Mary, her body was not discovered inside it; instead there were flowers and herbs. This is the origin of the tradition to make Bouquets and bunches of herbs and flowers on this holiday.
